responsibility has largely to be borne by the Head of the Departmt, and to a certain limited extent by the two Assistant Directors. It does not as far as I am aware affect individual Executive Engineers. In this respect the posts held by the last mentioned officers differ from my own, as the work of the "Accounts, Correspondence and Stores Branches under my supervision, increases with the growth of the Department calling for increased attention and supervision by myself. I have no dësire to unduly load my application with facts and figures and I think that it will be sufficient if I make the general remark, which you are in a position to endorse, that the volume of work in the Correspondence Branch has largely increased during the last eleven years, whilst the work of the Store

Branch also demands greatly increased attention. The increase

in the five chief items of Store Work (Stores issued to Works, Stores returned from Works, Goods purchased locally, Goods

purchased from Crown Agents, and Stores sold to the Puolic )

alone will give me an idea of the increased business to be

attended to. Under the five heads mentioned the transactions

during 1900 amounted to 8280,264 whilst during last year this

had increased to $593,452 or an increase of 111.74%. The work of

the Accounts Branch has also increased, and wit out giving

minute details a general idea of the extent of the increase

may be gathered from a comparison of the figures under the

chief heads of expenditure for the years 1900 and 1910 respective
